21 years ago, Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on a small, teen-centred network on US television. Unbeknownst at the time of its premiere, the show would go on to span 7 seasons of network TV, a 5-season spin-off TV show, hundreds of tie-in novels & comic books, and go on to become a pop culture and commercial phenomenon. To this day, conventions are still organised regularly all over the world, as well as annual charity screenings and fan-led meet-ups, viewing parties, themed nights and quizzes. The Buffy sensation even reached the realm of academia, with ‘Buffy studies’ being taught in several Universities globally, encompassing topics such as gender, pop culture, media, family and aesthetics. Most of all, Buffy provided a forward trajectory for female empowerment on TV.
To celebrate Buffy’s 21st anniversary on 10th March 2018, we have created a Microsoft Power BI dashboard embedded below to explore the main characters, their relationships, and the performance of the show season by season as it was aired.
